Navigating the Rollercoaster: Why Healing Isn't Linear

One of the biggest misconceptions about healing is that it should move in a straight line. Many people start therapy expecting that each week will feel a little easier than the last. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, they have a difficult day, feel overwhelmed by emotions they thought they had worked through, or notice old patterns resurfacing. It's easy to wonder, "Am I moving backwards?"
The reality is that healing isn't linear - it's a process of growth, practice, and learning. Just because old emotions, anxious thoughts, or coping patterns show up again doesn't mean you've failed or that therapy isn't working. More often than not, it's an opportunity to respond differently than you would have in the past. Progress isn't measured by never struggling again; it's measured by how you care for yourself when those struggles arise.
Think about learning any new skill. You wouldn't expect to go to the gym once and become stronger overnight, or practice an instrument a handful of times and never make another mistake. Healing works much the same way. As your nervous system begins to feel safer, it may reveal emotions or experiences that it wasn't ready to process before. While that can feel discouraging, it's often a sign that your mind and body are continuing to do the work of healing.
Instead of asking yourself, "Why am I back here?" try asking, "What's different about how I'm responding this time?" Maybe you're reaching out for support sooner, setting healthier boundaries, recognizing your triggers earlier, or offering yourself more compassion instead of criticism. Those changes are signs of growth, even if they don't always feel dramatic in the moment.
I provide therapy in Las Vegas to help adults navigate anxiety, trauma, and life's challenges with greater confidence and resilience. Healing may not be a straight path, but you don't have to walk it alone.
